On August 21st CWA Local 1298 held it's annual all day Steward training for all Stewards who represent members of Local 1298. The telco, YP, Mobility, and Unite Here Stewards were trained on various subjects pertaining to their role as an advocate for our members.  A state of the Union was provided along with a legislative upcate. The topics covered  included grievance and arbitration preparations, FMLA and short term disability,  representing disciplined workers, rights to information, and requesting mid-term bargaining.   The group also discussed the legal rights and protections of being a union Steward. They were also tested on contract knowledge. CWA Staff Rep. Pat Telesco discussed the importance of building Unions and guest speaker CWA District Ome Attorney Amy Young discussed at length the importance of grievance preparation. In the afternoon the class participated in group breakout workshops where they had to prepare a mock discipline for arbitration using the seven steps of Just Cause. The group presented their individual discipline scenarios and received feedback from Attorney Young. In addition to spending a full day learning we are very pleased to announce they also donated over $1200 for the hardship fund. Local 1298 is extremely proud of the Stewards who dedicate their time to policing the contract and fighting for everyone's rights in the workplace! Click Here for photos.
