The following policy governs the administration of payment for people who are late or absent due to extreme weather conditions.  It was resolved at a joint bargaining committee meeting in 1961 and is in effect until notice of change is received from the union office. I.RESPONSIBILITY A.  It is the employee’s responsibility to get to work B.  It is the employee’s responsibility to communicate with his/her supervisor if he/she is unable to get to work. C. It is the supervisor’s responsibility at this point to decide whether or not transportation should be made available. II.PAYMENT FOR TARDINESS OR ABSENCE A.The first-line supervisor is responsible for making the decision as to whether or not payment should be made. B. In making his/her decision, he/she should base his/her judgement on several factors, including availability of transportation, the severity of the storm (which means the amount of snow, the cold, etc.), the physical condition of the individual, the age of the individual, the distance the individual lives from a cleared road, the location of his/her home, and situations at home. Each case must be decided on its own merits.  Do not accept any blanket statements, such as “No one gets paid.”If you review these factors with any member who brings a complaint of not getting paid to you, then you should be in a position to judge whether or not the case has merits. If there are any doubts in your mind, these points should be reviewed immediately with the first-line supervisor involved, and if you are not satisfied with the results, contact your Business Agent.
